As we get older, our blood vessels and metabolism naturally don’t work quite as smoothly as they used to. One of the quiet “helpers” in the background is a tiny gas called nitric oxide (often shortened to NO). Nitric oxide is made inside your blood vessels and tells them to relax and open up. When that signal is strong, blood flows more easily, blood pressure tends to be healthier, and your heart and muscles get the oxygen and nutrients they need. When that signal is weak, blood vessels can get stiffer, blood pressure may creep up, and it becomes harder for the body to handle things like sugar and cholesterol as efficiently.

With age, conditions like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain around the middle become more common. These are all part of what’s called “cardiometabolic” health. In many of these situations, the body’s ability to make and respond to nitric oxide is reduced. That means the blood vessels don’t relax as well, and the inner lining of the arteries (the endothelium) doesn’t function at its best. Supporting nitric oxide is one way to help keep that lining healthier, which in turn can support better circulation, more comfortable blood pressure, and easier delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the heart, brain, and muscles.

Two amino acids, L‑arginine and L‑citrulline, are often used together to gently boost nitric oxide. L‑arginine is the direct “raw material” your body uses to make nitric oxide. Your blood vessels pull in L‑arginine and convert it into nitric oxide, which then tells the vessel walls to relax. The challenge is that when you take L‑arginine by mouth, a lot of it gets broken down in the gut and liver before it ever reaches your blood vessels. You can still benefit from it, but you often need higher doses, which some people find hard on the stomach.

That’s where L‑citrulline comes in. L‑citrulline is turned into L‑arginine inside the body, mainly in the kidneys and blood vessel lining. It slips past much of that early breakdown in the gut and liver, so a smaller amount can raise your L‑arginine levels more steadily and for a longer time. You can think of L‑arginine as the immediate fuel for nitric oxide, and L‑citrulline as the steady “supply line” keeping the tank from running low. When you use them together, you get both a quicker bump in nitric oxide production from arginine and a smoother, longer‑lasting support from citrulline.

For many adults, especially those in midlife and beyond, this combination, which is found in LRG9, can be a useful way to support overall cardiometabolic health. Better nitric oxide signaling can help blood vessels stay more flexible, which may support healthier blood pressure and blood flow. That improved blood flow can also help with exercise tolerance, things like walking, climbing stairs, or light workouts may feel a bit easier when circulation is better. Because nitric oxide is involved in how the body handles insulin and blood sugar, supporting it can also be one piece of a broader plan for metabolic health, along with diet, movement and sleep.
